| To spend as little time as possible on technical matters, you are strongly and sincerely recommended to use Firefox or Firefox Portable as your primary web browser for the course.
Also, you should have installed Adobe Flash Player and QuickTime or Quick Time Alternative on your computer (for further recommendations, please see “Software“).
To give you a quick visual overview of the course environment (Moodle) and its main tools, the Tutorial “Moodle” has been created.
Feel free to use the Chat, the Test Forum and the Test Wiki for “playing around”.
For any questions concerning the online course environment, please use the Forum “Online Course Environment”. |

| Introduction to the Web 2.0 |
Web 2.0 or Social Web
is a term that, on the hand, refers to certain technologies turning consumers into producers of Internet content and, on the other hand, describes the emergence of a new culture of communication and cooperation worldwide. |
| Notes to participants |
| For a quick overview of the Web 2.0’s most important tools and concepts, please have a look at the “Web 2.0 Glossary” first.
As for our course, we will focus on blogs, wikis, podcasts and social networks. |

To get a general idea of how companies are benefiting from Web 2.0., see the Web 2.0 Literature for the survey by Bughin, Jacques / Chui, Michael / Miller, Andy (2009). |

| Practical Application of the Software “The Self-Employed Woman. From Dream to Reality” |
| Notes to participants |
| In large parts of Europe women are strongly underrepresented among company founders. Self-employment, however, especially offers women an important and further to be developed alternative to engage in the labor market. |
| For this reason a software entitled “The Self-Employed Woman. From Dream to Reality” was developed, translated into |
| and tested in two projects funded by the European Commission: |
Initiative.Women.Founding (2006-2007) |
“She in Europe” (2008-2009) |
| In preparation for your personal business website, please have a look especially at the following chapters: |

| Creating a Blog / Website for Business Use – Get ready |
| Notes to participants |
| As we learned from the “She in Europe” software, being a successful entrepreneur is very much about being |
a good networker and |
a good performer and storysteller respectively. |
| So what you are are going to do now is to take your 1-page executive summary either of your business plan and concept or your curriculum vitae and turn it into a an ‘elevator speech’.
The idea behind an elevator speech is that if you are stepping onto an elevator and someone asks “What are you doing for living?”, what do you say? You have only very little time to convince this person you are someone to get to know – someone to do business with. |
| To get a better idea of a compelling elevator speech, you may have a look at the following videos: |
ExtremeMeetings (2008): Verbal Ping Pong. YouTube video, published October 7th, 2008. |
Dresang, Joel (2009): Elevator Speech how to video. YouTube video, published March 15th, 2009. (Facebook Examples) |
bconnor123 (2009): Elevator Speech. YouTube video, published November 5th, 2008 |
McCormac, Joe (2009): Sheffield’s Elevator Speech – The One Minute Pitch. YouTube video, published January 12th, 2009. |
| Assignment |
Produce a 60-90 second film with the help of a cell phone or camera with video capabilities, introducing either your company or yourself focussing on your present job and upload it to the YouTube Video Channel “She in Europe”. (Note: If you have no opportunity to produce a video, concentrate on writing your elevator speech, and add your text to a posting to the Forum “Elevator Speech”.

| Creating a Blog / Website for Business / Private Use – Get it done |
| Notes to participants |
| To prove that it needs neither money nor specific IT knowledge (e.g. on how to install database software) to create one’s own business website, we will use the free and most powerful WordPress Free Hosted Blogging Service. |
| Before getting started with your own website, please have a look at the Tutorial “WordPress” first. |
| You then may want to try the Test Weblog “She in Europe” to familiarize yourself with WordPress. |
| Please note that many of the software’s features are not available for free blogs hosted on WordPress.com. Once you have decided to run a blog or a content management system on your own webspace, you, however, will be able to experience almost endless possibilities of creating your own business website. |
| Assignment A |
| Login to the WordPress Test Weblog “She in Europe” and create |
an “About me” page (see your “elevator speech”) including an image and |
a meaningful post (not just “test”) which is filed under a certain category and which includes tags. |
